What kind of maintenance does Roadking require?
The Roadking requires regular maintenance for optimal performance.
At every 5000 miles or 8000 km or annually, change the engine oil and filter.
Also, inspect the motorcycle for items needing lubrication, adjustment, or cleaning.
Check wearable items like hoses and tires for good condition.
The air cleaner filter should be inspected at 5000 miles, 8000 km and cleaned as necessary in lukewarm water with mild detergent.
Spark plugs need to be replaced every 30000 miles, 48000 km or two years.
Spoke tightness of spoked rims should be checked at 1000 miles, 1600 km and more often if riding in severe conditions.
Hand control switch housing screw torque and front brake handlebar clamp screw torque should be tightened annually.
Steering head bearings should be lubricated at 20000 miles, 32000 km.
Windshield bushings should be inspected at 10000 miles, 16000 km.
Primary chaincase lubricant and transmission lubricant should be replaced at 5000 miles, 8000 km and more often if riding in severe conditions.
Brake fluid should be replaced every two years.
Front and rear axle nut torque should be tightened annually.
The battery, terminal torque, and connections should be checked and cleaned annually.
The fuel filter should be replaced at 100000 miles, 161000 km.
The standard inspection checklist includes inspecting the drive belt and sprockets, checking and adjusting the drive belt tension, inspecting rear sprocket isolators at every tire change, inspecting electrical equipment and switches, checking tire pressure and tread, lubricating brake and clutch controls, checking brake pad wear, inspecting brake fluid level and clutch fluid level for models from 2017-2020, adjusting and checking the clutch cable for models from 2021+, cleaning the oil cooler, inspecting oil and brake lines, lubricating the jiffy stand, exhaust system, fasteners, shields, fuel door hinge and latch, and road testing component and system function.
For the Roadking, there are three fluids that need to be changed - engine oil, primary chaincase lubricant, and transmission lubricant.
You can use Castrol V-Twin 20W50.
The standard oil change interval is 5000 miles, 8000 km, but if you frequently ride short distances in low temperatures, change the oil every 1500 miles, 2400 km.
To check the belt tension, put the motorcycle in neutral on its stand, with the rear wheel on the ground and nothing in the saddlebags.
Push up on the middle of the bottom half of the belt until the belt tension gauge registers 10 lb of pressure.
The target belt tension is 3/18-9/16 in, 9.5-14.3 mm.
If out of spec, adjust it or take it to a dealer.
